Foodies in Singapore, queued since 1am, braved the drizzle / rain and humid hot weather…
Tested / tasted the various food samples and voted their favorites, at SingTel Hawker Heroes challenge.
And the winners are:
– Tian Tian Chicken Rice from Maxwell (as good as my taste buds remember)
– Gordon Ramsay’s version of Chili Crabs (interesting, more spices used and compared to Jumbo, less sweet)
– 328 Katong Laksa (still one of the best I’ve had, although event version was without cockles / no hum)
The Singapore hawker heroes narrowly edged-out Chef Ramsay in the live poll by 6 per cent of the total vote in the closely contested battle.
In each dish category, Tian Tian Chicken Rice won by 6 per cent, 328 Katong Laksa by 19 per cent and Chef Ramsay’s version of Chilli Crab triumphed by 5 per cent.
Chef Ramsay said:
“It’s been phenomenal to see how passionate the people of Singapore are about their hawker fare. The hawkers have impressed me with their ability to whip-up dishes with such
amazing flavours. Now that I’ve experienced the best of Singapore cuisine, I can say without doubt the people of Singapore have much to be proud of – authentic, genuine, simple food, that is of
amazing quality and full of flavour.”
Congratulations to all the winners!
Many thanks to all our hawkers / food heroes and their helpers for doing their best and presenting such yummy food. And of course, to the organizers and all, for making it possible.
It truly was an interesting sight, seeing that many queued for a taste of the food… And the happening supporters of Chef Gordon Ramsay.
It was the first time in a decade I set food in Newton Food Centre and with such a huge crowd.
Scarily packed, would be the right way to sum it. But still, an extremely interesting experience 🙂
And of course, brought awareness to our hawkers, waking up early to prepare for the day’s business and providing good local food to us.
