Photos: First Look of Sony Xperia Z Ultra

We had our glimpse and touch of Sony’s latest smartphone / phablet, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, at The Retrospective yesterday.

Looked quite similar to the Xperia Z but don’t let the photo fool you.
It comes as a 6.44″ full HD, ultra slim and water resistant smartphone or phablet (phone + tablet size).

Here’s a photo of my iPhone4s, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and friend’s Samsung Galaxy S4, side by side:

Collage of its exterior (left to right):
– its screen’s clarity, slimness and various side flaps / buttons.
– back view of the white model with NFC logo and the docking / charging point, when you purchase the optional docking charger, DK30.

Jellybean 4.2 would be its current Android version, while running on Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor with 2.2 GHz quad-core CPUs.
Smooth and fast, with normal usage and switching between apps.

Though it’s huge in terms of size, you can still easily hold it or text with one hand (texting part to be tested when review set is in).

Display, proved to be stunning with much visual details when we played the NEX-7 trailer.
Note: following photo doesn’t do the display justice, you have to watch the trailer on it in person.

Friend suggested ‘mounting’ it on the car headrest for movie / tv series watching.
Sounds cool but let’s see if any 3rd party accessories maker will try making a grip or holder for that.

Based on press release, it’s said to have the “super responsive screen with handwriting recognition which is compatible with any pencil and selected stylus or pen (capacitive stylus or metal pen with tip diameter over 1mm). You can even write notes or sketches during calls so you’ll always be ready capture your ideas as they happen”.

That was tested yesterday, assisted by David, with available stuff on table:

It worked as said, responded to the lightest touch.

And in case you were wondering, the Xperia Z Ultra was returned unscratched 😛

Pairing with its various compatible accessories, as always, easy.
Same goes for the water resistance test, setting it in a small box filled with water, no issues.

If you are an avid phonegrapher or into on-the-go snapshots / videos, you may not find its photo or video quality as amazing as its other features.

Not because of its 8 megapixel camera but photos and videos seemed pixelated in low light and lost quite a bit of detail.
Which is an issue, even for my Xperia Z.

Would a software tweak make it better?
I certainly hope so.

Let’s see what else it can do, when the review set comes 🙂
