While the Japanese have long recognised the health and beauty benefits of collagen-rich foods, the concept has only recently gained momentum in Singapore.
Housed within the newly renovated Shokutsu Ten Japanese Food Street at Jurong Point is Shabu Tontei, a new concept offering a tantalising selection of hot pot and cooked food items. The feature of the menu is the restaurant’s signature Tonkotsu soup base that is rich in collagen, a beauty and health booster that is known to improve the appearance of skin, nails, hair, and strengthen immunity as well as promote general well being.
Created by Shabu Tontei’s Japanese chefs, the Tonkotsu soup base is simmered at high heat overnight from a recipe using high quality pork bones, pork neck, and chicken bones in a special pot designed to extract maximum “Umami” from the bone marrows. This meticulous process yields a velvety, gratifying broth extremely rich in collagen – up to 26,400 mg per pot!
Seafood lovers can opt for the special Abundance Kani Suki ($33.80/pax, min 2 to dine), which includes Alaskan snow crab leg, king crab leg, scallops, mussels and prawns, available only from 3 February to 5 April 2015.
Diners may also select from other tasty broths such as the Tori Paitan for a creamy chicken soup base, or the Wadashi soup base for a lighter Japanese seaweed flavour. The soups are accompanied by an assortment of premium air-flown Japanese and US meats in a tantalising hot pot menu.
A group of two can enjoy air-flown meats from Japan in the Momoiro Buta Shabu Shabu Set ($66.00), which consists of Japanese black pork belly and collar; or the Wagyu Beef Plus ($70.00), consisting of premium Hokkaido wagyu beef and a choice of Japanese black pork collar or belly. Alternatively, the Kurobuta Shabu Shabu Set ($58.00) includes air-flown black pork collar and belly from the United States.
All Shabu Shabu sets come with a generous serving of assorted vegetables, chawanmushi, and free flow of rice and side dishes. Additional servings of meat, seafood and vegetables can be ordered a la carte.
Apart from hot pot sets, diners can also enjoy a wide variety of a la carte items, such as premium tonkatsu, cooked to order using a unique double fry method to retain the juiciness of the meat. The Hire & Cheese Katsu (S$14.90), filled with warm cheese sandwiched between two premium pork tenderloins is a must-try.
Shabu Tontei is located within Shokutsu Ten Japanese Food Street at #B1-52 Jurong Point, 1 Jurong West Central 2, and is open daily from 11.30am – 10pm.
